Fish Farming Basics: Pond Preparation, Stocking and Water Quality
The three things that decide most pond results: a well-prepared pond, healthy fingerlings and good water.
Fish farming rewards patience and routine. Most failures trace back to three things: the pond, the fingerlings and the water.
Pond preparation
Dry and repair the pond, remove excess mud, apply lime according to soil needs, then fill with clean water and allow natural food to develop before stocking.
Stocking
- Buy active, disease-free fingerlings from a trusted hatchery.
- Do not overstock; crowding slows growth and spreads disease.
- Release in the cool of morning or evening after matching water temperature.
Feed and water
Feed quality fish feed at regular times and adjust to what the fish actually eat. Watch the colour and smell of water, and note oxygen levels, because low oxygen at dawn is a common cause of loss.
Keep records
Write down stocking date, feed used, sampling weights and any treatment. Records turn guesses into decisions.
