Onion Farming Notes: From Sowing to Harvest in the Field
What we learned growing onion at our Pabna site: soil, sowing, care and harvest.
Onion is one of Bangladesh's most watched crops. At our Pabna site (Ruppur, Pakshi, Ishwardi) onion runs alongside litchi, carrot and vegetables.

Soil and bed preparation
Onion likes loose, fertile, well-drained soil. The land is ploughed several times and shaped into fine rows so the bulbs can swell easily and water does not stand.
Sowing
Seed bulbs or sets are placed by hand along the rows at even spacing. It looks slow, but careful spacing means even growth and easier weeding later.

Care
- Weed early, because young onion competes poorly.
- Irrigate lightly and regularly; stop watering some days before harvest.
- Watch for leaf spots and pests, and act quickly.
Harvest
When the tops begin to fall and yellow, the bulbs are ready. They are lifted, cured in shade and stored in airy conditions.
