Lemongrass: An Easy Herbal Crop With Many Uses
Why lemongrass is a practical crop for small and mid-sized farms.
Lemongrass is a hardy, fragrant grass used in cooking, herbal tea and for its aromatic oil. It is on our list of upcoming projects.
Why growers like it
- It tolerates a range of soils and needs relatively little care.
- It can be cut several times a year once established.
- Grazing animals usually leave it alone.
Growing basics
Plant slips or divided clumps in well-drained soil with plenty of sun. Water regularly while young, weed early and give modest organic feeding. Harvest by cutting stalks near the base.
Uses
Fresh stalks for kitchen use, dried leaves for tea, and distillation for oil. Each route has its own market, so plan the buyer before the planting.
